In an effort to beef up account security in Guild Wars 2, ArenaNet is expanding account security options with new ways to secure player accounts and offering new incentives for players to adopt them.
In addition to email and mobile authentication, which have both been offered for some time, the game will now be offering SMS authentication via cell phone or landline to validate log-ins from previously unknown locations.
Once you associate a phone number with your account, if someone tries to log in to your account from a new location, we’ll send an SMS to your cell phone or call your landline to verify that it’s you. And if you ever forget your password or lose access to your account, you’ll be able to ask us to send an SMS to your cell phone or call your landline to provide a code that you can use to reset your password. With one system, we can substantially improve both account security and account recovery.
While players already using two-factor authentication via an authenticator app will not be prompted to associate a phone number with their account, the official post announcing SMS authentication does stress that SMS authentication should be a better solution for most people, as while the log-in procedure for both will be very similar, a change in phone number is a lot less likely than the possibility of losing or uninstalling one’s authenticator.
Starting immediately, all players choosing to protect their account with either SMS authentication or a mobile authenticator will be rewarded with the new Mystical Dragon mini pictured above.
